Brief History of Strengthening Families Georgia

Strengthening Families Georgia – A New Vision

The Governor’s Office for Children and Families (now the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services, Office of Prevention and Family Support) leads the Strengthening Families effort in Georgia. Since its inception in 2006, Strengthening Families Georgia (SFG) has expanded from an effort to utilize frontline early childhood caregivers as a means to prevent child abuse and neglect, to an initiative aimed at embedding the Strengthening Families™ Protective Factors Framework throughout all systems, programs and services supporting families with young children. In 2006 The Governor’s Office for Children and Families (formerly the Georgia Children’s Trust Fund Commission) convened a group from the early childhood education and child abuse prevention sectors to develop a two-year Strengthening Families plan to utilize frontline early childhood caregivers as a means to prevent child abuse and neglect. Since then the Office of Prevention and Family Support housed in the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services serves as the primary sponsor of this program. Since then Strengthening Families Georgia (SFG) has expanded from an effort to utilize frontline early childhood caregivers as a means to prevent child abuse and neglect, to an initiative aimed at embedding the Strengthening Families Protective Factors Framework throughout all systems, programs and services supporting families with young children. A collaborative Leadership Team and Partnership of nearly 50 child and family serving organizations guide the work of SFG. The administration of SFG is supported in part by the Georgia Association for the Education of Young Children (GAEYC) with funding by the Georgia Division of Families and Children Services, Office of Prevention and Family Support, through the Federal Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention Grant Program.
